While being based mainly in London, Nigel’s roots are firmly in the South West of England, citing ‘being dragged round the galleries of West Penwith as a small boy being introduced to work by Alfred Wallis and Ben Nicholson’ as a formative influence. Nigel uses oil on canvas and sometimes board, with particular concern for colour and composition. Though semi-abstract, there is a strong figurative read to his work. He abstracts from a source by removing some of the conventions of representation, hoping to create ‘an awkward but calm relationship’ between his subject and the viewer. Composition is central to the balance of his paintings, ensuring the viewer can ease themselves into his vision.
