Mary Scott paints from her studio in St Ives, her work emerging intuitively as abstract recollections of long walks on the Cornish coast, her adopted home. Through the process of painting, she reflects on the passage of time: the stability of ancient rock beneath layers of impermanence and change. Mary worked in the geological and environmental management professions earlier in her career and says that her desire now is for those viewing her art to slow down and connect with geological time and the fragility of our planet. Working largely in oils and pigments, she uses tools, rags, found objects and her hands to create layers of texture, things hidden and revealed, and a sense of age. Her work is often described as ‘calming’. Mary is a member of the St Ives Society of Artists. Her work has found landing places as far afield as Japan, New Zealand and Alask
